Parklands
Sir.—The Prime Minister opened the Parklands Private Hospital extension yesterday thus adding to the number of long-stay beds for the elderly available only to those who can pay. Those without money will continue to wait for a public bed or a fees subsidy. Contrary to Parklands’ advertisement (June 1) stating that “it is fully self-supporting” and “privately funded,” all such private hospitals are heavily State-sub-sidised. All beds licensed for long stay elderly patients attract a daily bed subsidy of $23.50, while a fixed number of patients have fees fully paid by the Hospital Board. Public facilities and fees subsidies, available on basis of need, are being held or cut back to limit State spending. At the same time, public money is diverted, seemingly without limit, • into subsidising private facilities available only to the rich. Parklands’ new wing may provide excellent care for those who can afford it. but. it is retarding the development of adequate and equitable care for all elderly.—Yours, etc.,
ELIZABETH MacRAILD. June 3, 1982.
