Cost of tour
Sir,—“One group alone” did not divide the country over the Springboks. Elizabeth Sutherland (June 1) is too modest. The first time I heard her (or of her) was on a 3ZB interview about the tour. Repeatedly she insisted on vilifying the black African nations. When told to keep to the subject or be quiet, she shouted, “I am sick of being pushed around by black people." I complained to Race Relations here, but five months later, when Hiwi Tauroa’s office got around to replying, I was told that inquiries revealed an apparent offence, but the tapes had been destroyed. S.P.I.R. did plenty of stirring. It is history that, before the Auckland pro ; tour march, named organisers included four National M.P.s, but overnight it became a “spontaneous" demonstration sold like a deodorant with a pretty girl commercial. Such trickery bred costly clashes—Yours, etc.,. . ' ■ '
