Guidelines for miners
Wellington reporter Water and soil guidelines ■ for miners are being drafted by the Water and Soil Division of the Ministry of Works and Development. Two meetings have been held with interested parties and a third is scheduled for later this month. It is hoped the new guidelines will be ready for the 1982-83 prospecting season. Environmentalists, miners and catchment boards have been active in the discussions. The main point, still at issu£ is how the guidelines can be enforced, with the environmentalists fearing that they may be “just platitudes." The environmental groups consider that the guidelines will need to be accepted as the basis for setting conditions on water rights by catchment authorities, and also on mining privileges by the Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy.
