Pollution monitored
Exhaust fume levels in the central city area are being monitored as part of Health Department air pollution readings this winter. The regional air pollution control officer, Mr D. Pullen, said that Carbon monoxide levels recorded in Manchester Street last month had exceeded‘the World Health Organisation eight-hour standard on 16 days. It was too early to say whether
closing streets for the City Hall had affected traffic movement but the Christchurch City Council had installed a traffic counter on Hereford Street. Air pollution in other city areas was average during May, except in Avonside where the smoke level exceeded the W.H.O. limit on six days, compared with two days for the same month last year. .
