General forecast: The depression over the eastern Tasman Sea is moving only slowly east, and its associated frontal band is still likely to cover much of the North Island with rain in many districts. Strong cold south-easterlies cover central New Zealand. In the far south, a ridge of high pressure is intensifying, and it will be fine in Fiordland, Southland, and Otago, but showers are likely- to persist about Canterbury and coastal Marlborough.
