The Diagnostic Laboratory Services of the Dunedin Hospital and the University of Otago Department of Pathology are recognised for training in all components of the postgraduate programmes of the College of Pathologists of Australia. There is an active personalised postgraduate training programme in all branches of Pathology run by the senior professional staff of the Departments which is designed to prepare candidates for both the F.R.C.P.A. Special and General Examinations and the D.C.P. (Otago). Preparation for the Diploma in Clinical Pathology (D.C.P.) Otago, is a means of obtaining a sound basic training in all four main subspecialties of Pathology (Anatomic Pathology. Haematology, Microbiology and Chemical Pathology). The D.C.P. (Otago) is recognised as a higher qualification in Pathology and can be completed within a three year period of training. This is especially valuable for trainees who intend sitting the F.R.C.P.A. in one subspecialty. Appointees would also be designated the status of Clinical Tutor in the University of Otago'Department of Pathology. As such they would be free to participate in the various research activities of the department and become involved in departmental teaching duties. Such teaching duties have been shown to be of considerable help in the preparation for postgraduate examinations.
