Two Chch boys in cross-country team
Two Christchurch boys have been selected in the New Zealand junior men's cross-country team of eight runners to compete in the Australian championships in Hobart on June 19.
They are Colin Macdonald (Technical) and Bruce Baxter (Christchurch), who were first and third respectively in the South Island trial last year. The second-placed Greg Cameron (Otago) is the only other South Islander in the’ eight-man team. Dave Ellis (Christchurch) and Graeme Mollison (University). who were only 4s and 5s behind Baxter in the trial were unlucky to miss selection. The’ North Islanders in the team are Tony Woodhouse. Ray Butler, Chris McLay, Dallas” McCullum and Des Woods. The team was announced by the N.Z. Amateur Athletic Association at its manage-
ment meeting last Tuesday evening. Christine Burden, one of the top contenders for the Nike City of Christchurch marathon tomorrow will receive $lOOO as a training grant from the $6500 prize money she and three other New Zealand representatives won in taking the teamprize at the City of London marathon last April. The others who will also get $lOOO grants are Lorraine Moller, Bev Shingles and Judith Hine. The meeting also decided the venues for next season's international track and field series. They are Dunedin. January 12: Christchurch. January 15; Whangarei. January 19 and Auckland, January 22. The national director of coaching. Dragon Ivanov, was selected to back up Dave Norris and Steve Rollings at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
