Rugby milestone
The Town-Country rugby match at Lancaster Park on Monday will mark the 75th anniversary of this fixture. There have not, however, been 75 games. There have been two breaks, eight years from 1912 and for the six years of World War 11. Of the 61 games, Town has won 45, Country 13 (five of these in the last seven years) and three have been drawn.
The Craw Shield has been the trophy ’ at stake since 1954. It was presented that year by. Mr Vic Craw, a rugby enthusiast of Little Akaloa. Alex Wyllie, who will be watching Monday’s match in his capacity as Canterbury selector, holds the record for most appearances. He wore the Country colours 16 times, between 1963 and 1980.
