Walkways
Sir,—An item in the- West Coast edition (April 30), "Walkways gathering at Westport today." is an accurate report except where it discusses possible moves to have walkways maintained by local bodies. A sentence reads, “Mr Lucas said the Commission now • had powers to force such a move.” I said that the Commission had no powers to force such a move. This becomes clear in the next sentence where I am quoted as saying “any such takeover would have 'to be negotiated."' The Walkway Commission policy is to encourage community involvement' in walkways, and throughout New Zealand there has been excellent co-operation from local bodies, service organisations and other voluntary groups and individuals in the establishment of walkways and associated displays. It is the policy to foster this type of involvement but the Commission neither has the power nor would wish to force on a reluctant local body responsibility for future maintenance of walkways. — Yours, etc.,
P. H. C. LUCAS, Director-General. June 1, 1982. ’
