Kiwifruit harvest below estimate

PA Tauranga The kiwifruit harvest, onethird down on estimate and about two weeks sooner than expected, is coming to a dismal end, say Ministry of Agriculture staff. The Tauranga senior field officer, Mr S. Temperton, said that the final packout totals should reach four million trays, compared with the initial estimate of six million. About 15 per cent of growers had achieved their crop estimates. The others

were well down, said the staff. For some, the unexpectedly light crop has posed financial problems. One bought packaging for 40.000 trays but packed only 17,000. “The light harvest is particularly disappointing for the newer growers,” said Mr Temperton. “They had expected to get their first income from their orchard and find it is much reduced. Some of them will be looking for financial help to get them through another year.” he said.
