$20,000 fine for video smuggling
PA Auckland An Ellerslie businessman has been fined $20,000 on charges of smuggling $1,044,415 worth of video games and making a wrong entry in respect of the goods seized by customs officers early last year. Nigel Bennallack. aged 40. was sentenced yesterday in the District Court at Auckland, by Judge D. I. N. Maclean. He also fined. the company involved .in the charges. Intermarket, Ltd. $BO,OOO.
The charges arose from the seizure of 6000 imported video games which were to have been bought by Smith and Brown and Maple. Judge Maclean earlier found that Bennallack arranged for the goods to be packed and labelled in a manner “which could deceive.” Yesterday, he said the offence was very’ serious and had to be dealt with seriously. Counsel (Mr C. Cato) said that $62,000 had already been paid in duty for the imported goods.
