Patea advised to seek other options
PA Wellington The Patea Action Committee has been urged by the Government to abandon plans to save the town freezing works and seek other options. The committee, headed by the Mayor of Patea, Mr Norman Mac Kay, was told by the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) yesterday that regional development cash would be available for new industries. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Muldoon said that the Government would help Patea.
He said the delegation had been told to “get rid of” the options of keeping the works going under new management or in a reduced form. “Those are the preferred options but .1 think, and I believe'they think, that they are not going to be possible because the works is not viable. “... If they can get rid of those options then we can look into this regional development of what can be done with the premises, the buildings, the plant and the labour force — and get something going before the closing date (August 31)?’
