Resuscitation booklet published by N.H.F.
A detailed booklet on car-dio-pulmonary resuscitation had been produced by the National Heart Foundation, which is trying to persuade more people to learn the technique.. The manual is aimed at ; people who have received C.P.R. instruction. It is a. reminder of the techniques of basic life support. The medical director of the foundation (Dr D. R. Hay) said that it was essential that people learnt C.P.R. from competent instructors, using training manikins. “It is not enough just to read a booklet such as this,” he said. Badly performed C.P.R. could damage a person’s liver or stomach. Too much pressure, or pressure in the wrong position, could fracture ribs and damage lungs, he said.
It was not necessary to use cardiac compression when a person was unconscious but still breathing. That could prompt a “troublesome rhythm disturbance" in the heart, said Dr Hay. The ' 37-page manual includes 47 photographs, taken
at The Princess Margaret Hospital in Christchurch. The first edition contains 30,000 copies. C.P.R. instruction was available from the National Heart. Foundation,.■. St John Ambulance, and the Red Cross, said Dr Hay.
