Netball courts

Sir. — The people of Canterbury should be most grateful' for the stand you have taken in your leading article of May 27, on the suggested encroachment by the Netball Association on further grassland and trees in Hagley Park. Over the years it has been a ceaseless battle to prevent parts of the park being taken over by other organisations. First there was the attempt to continue Blenheim Road through south Hagley Park, then the road across the corner of north Hagley Park and not so long ago the attempt by the Hospital Board to uproot the trees opposite the hospital to make a car park. All these attempts have been resisted but as the city grows there will be further pressures by sports bodies and others to meddle with the park. If we can hold out against these pressures for a few more years I am sure that organised sport and others will finally get the message that the park is to be left alone. — Yours, etc..
