Peaceful Truxtun protest

The presence of the American nuclear-powered ship Truxtun in New Zealand was the subject of a peaceful protest opposite the United States Consular office in Christchurch yesterday. About 18 people, most of them members of Ecology Action and Christchurch peace groups, held a silent rally in Victoria Square. Later, they presented a letter to the United States consular agent. Mr Malcolm Ott, expressing concern about the visit of the Truxtun to Wellington.

Mr Larry Ross, the secretary of the New Zealand Free Zone Committee, also gave Mr Ott a copy of a letter presented to the United States Vice-President, Mr George Bush, on his recent visit to New Zealand. The letter called on Mr Bush to consider a proposal for New Zealand to become a “neutral, nuclear-weapon free zone."
