Bread and milk war?
Auckland dairy owners are preparing to battle with service stations that are also selling milk and bread. They will meet on Monday to discuss tactics. One owner is believed to have told his bread supplier that he would not buy bread . from it if it sold to a nearby service station. The service station owner retaliated by buying bread from an independent bakery, and selling it at half price. The executive director of
the Motor Trades Association. Mr Max Barclay, said service stations were acting in self-defence by selling bread and milk. “We are disappointed with the inroads other retailers are making into traditionally automotive lines." he said. “Dairy owners don’t believe it’s fair that they have to get a seven-day licence to sell and service stations seem to be able to sell willynilly,” said a West Auckland dairy owner.
