Award won by Waikanae man

A Waikanae artist. Mr Maurice Conly, has been awarded the New Zealand Antarctic Society's 1981 conservation trophy. The trophy, an Emperor penguin carved in walnut, is awarded for significant contributions to any aspect of Antarctic conservation. Mr Conly spent two summers painting life and work in the Antarctic, in 1971-72 and 1973-74. His first visit was made as official artist for the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the second was to make a pictorial

record for the Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R. Samples of Mr Conly's work are on display in the Antarctic wing of the Canterbury Museum in the form of three large dioramas of wild life; Mr Conly has also used his artistic talents to design New Zealand and Pacific Island stamp issues. He designed the new set of definitive stamps for the Ross Dependency issued by the New Zealand Post Office to coincide with the twenty-fifth anniversary of Scott Base last January.
