Woman jockey in Derby
NZPA Louisville For the second time in IVB years, a woman will ride in the Kentucky Derby. Mary Russ will ride Johnny Can Hop in tomorrow’s event. She has ridden the horse once before, winning a race at Gulfstream Park. Russ, aged 28, posted victories with Lord Darnley earlier this year in the Gulfstream Park Handicap and The Widdener Handicap at Hialeah. She also was the leading nder at the Tropical-At-Calder meeting last winter
The first woman to ride in the Derby, Diane Crump, finished fifteenth on Fathom in 1970, when Dus‘ ‘"'•'fomander won.
