PA Wellington The member of Parliament for Hastings from 1949 to 1954, Mr S. I. Jones, died on Wednesday, Parliament was told by the Speaker. Sir Richard Harrison, when it
sat at 2.30 -p.m. yesterday. Members stood in silence for a minute as a mark of respect. The Minister of State (Mr Thomson) tabled a notice of a motion asking the House to recommend to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) that he advise the Governor-Gen-eral to reappoint Mr L. J. Castle as an Ombudsman. Six other notices of motion were tabled by members, and one motion was held by the Speaker. Ministers answered 15 questions. A private member’s measure, the Nuclear-Free Zone (New Zealand) Bill, was brought into the House by Mr R. W. Prebble (Lab., Auckland Central). A division on its introduction was lost, 35-36.
The House adjourned at 5.30 p.m. for dinner.
When the House resumed sitting at 7.30 p.m., a local bill, the Lower Hutt City Council (Hutt Park) Bill, was put through its committee stage and was reported back to the House, without amendment, and given its third reading. The Address-in-Reply debate continued, with Mr J. L. Hunt (Lab., New Lynn) resuming his address, which had been interrupted the previous evening. He was followed by the Minister for the Arts (Mr Highet).
Mr P. T. E. Woollaston (Lab.. Nelson) gave his maiden speech. Mr K. R. Allen (Nat., Tauranga), Sir .Basil Arthur (Lab., Timaru), the Minister of Tourism (Mr Talbot), Mr R. K. Maxwell (Lab., Waitakere), Ms Marilyn Waring (Nat., Waipa), and Dr B. C. Gregory (Lab., Northern Maori) spoke during the Ad-dress-in-Reply debate before the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
