Two men rescued from liferaft

PA Whangarei Two commercial fishermen were rescued from a liferaft after their 7m launch, the Island I, exploded near Coppermine Island, off the Northland coast yesterday. The names of the fishermen were not available yesterday but according to "the police neither of the men was hurt.

The men were fishing in the boat when it apparently exploded and sank without trace. The cause of the explosion is not known. A search began when a cargo ship entering Whangarei Harbour sighted smoke off the end of Coppermine Island in the Hen and Chickens group. The ship sent a radio message to the Northland Harbour Board’s Marsden Point headquarters. The pilot boat Ngapuhi was sent to investigate and the board alerted other ships in the area. A fishing boat, the Donna Joanne, which was working in the area, picked the two men off a liferaft.

They were then transferred to the Ngapuhi which dropped them at Marsden Point.
