Call to improve policy-making

The making of social policies should involve more research and long-term planning, says the Planning Council in its latest report, “Who Makes Social Policy?” The report is a study’ of policy-making in New Zealand. It was prompted by the council's concern that social development policies were not working as well as possible. An officer from the Social Welfare Department assisted the council in completing the report. In some areas, policy-mak-ing provisions could be im-

proved and better integrated, said the council. One area was the work of the Cabinet Committee on Family and Social Affairs. “The work of this committee should be supported by strong advisory bodies and it should co-ordinate policy decisions from the 11 Government departments which contribute to its work,” said the council. The Social Development Council, the Advisory Committee on Women’s Affairs, and other Government advisory bodies could be made more use of, said the report.
