A.C.C. levies on motor-cyclists reduced

PA Wellington Accident compensation levies on the owners of motor-cycles have been reduced. according to the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger). There is no change to the levy on cars. Accident compensation levies are paid by motor vehicle owners annually as oart of the vehicle registration fee.

Mr Bolger said the existing system had been simplified.

“Now there are only two classes which will attract a levy, one at $14.20 and one at $5. In addition there is a nil category. "This means there has been a change from 18 to three' classification rates, and this has resulted in 16

reductions and 10 increases in actual levy payable. Although no individual increase is more than $4, a similar amount of income will be derived under the new system as in previous years.” Referring to the reductions in the levies on motor-cycles, Mr Bolger said research, particularly a survey by the Ministry of Transport, indicated that although motorcyclists were more at risk than other road users, they were not necessarily more ati fault. “It should also be noted that the decision not to change the levy on the owners of cars means that the levy has remained at $14.20 since the introduction of the accident compensation system in 1974.” said Mr Bolger.
