Unionists evict Maori group

PA Auckland The eviction of a community group from the Auckland trade union centre has created a rift between two of the city’s prominent political activists.

The Polynesian Resource Centre was yesterday evicted from the - offices it rented from the Auckland Trades Council. Police were present during the eviction. A founder, member of the centre, Ms Rebecca Evans, said that a personal vendetta against her by the president of the Trades Council, Mr G. H. Anderson, was the . reason for the eviction . Mr Anderson denied the allegation.

Behind the argument is a

document by a group called Black Unity, criticising the trade union movement for not doing enough to help Maori and Pacific Islands causes.

According to Ms Evans, there are about 17 groups in the Black Unity movement, of which only a few were aligned to the Polynesian Resource Centre. Mr Anderson said the decision to evict the centre was made by the nine-member board which administered the centre, and was endorsed by about 80 union delegates at a meeting yesterday. He said Ms Evans’s personal position with the centre was not a factor.
