$4000 bail set man accused of rape attempt

Bail and sureties totalled $12,000 when a man, aged 41, appeared before Judge Bradford in the District Court yesterday on a charge of attempted rape. The defendant, who was granted interim suppression of his name, is alleged to have committed the offence against a girl, aged 15, on April 4. Bail was sought by counsel (Mr C. A. McVeigh) who said that his client would be pleading not guilty to the alleged offence. The defendant was remanded to May 28 for the taking of depositions. Bail was opposed by Sergeant W. J. Ralph Martin Coe, aged 45, was remanded on bail to June 9 for a defended hearing. Sergeant .McCormick said the defendant had got into the first shop by throwing a rubbish bin through a window. A police alarm had been tripped and Howe was found hidden under a blanket in the Derby Clothing Company premises. Sergeant McCormick said the defendant was wearing a black leather jacket, valued at $298, from the Natural Wear Leather shop. He told the police he took the jacket because he was cold. Compensation of $l2O was sought in respect of the broken window, said Sergeant McCormick. CONVICTED A man who was convicted of stealing a bottle of wine from a delicatessen told the police he had done so because he had earlier been to the Totalisator Agency Board and had no money to pay for it. Patrick Gordon Braxton, aged 47, admitted stealing a bottle of Madeira wine, the property of La Maison Delicatessen, Ltd, on April 16. Sergeant McCormick said Braxton had gone into the delicatessen in the Shades Arcade at 4.10 p.m. He had been seen to take a bottle of wine, valued at $11.95.
