M.P. to seek N-free N.Z.

PA Wellington The Opposition member of Parliament. Mr R. W. Prebble (Auckland Central), said yesterday he plans to introduce a bill declaring New Zealand to be a nuclear-free zone. As the Shadow Minister for,. Pacific Island Affairs, Mi* Prebble said he had received approval from the Parliamentary Labour caucus to introduce a Private Member’s Bill.

“I am very serious about ;his measure and it is a bill

that I hope will attract support from enough National members to become law.” Mr Prebble said that the likelihood of nuclear war was greater now than at any time in history. “The passing of a law banning nuclear weapons from New Zealand could save this country from destruction, and the bill I propose will be in line with New Zealand’s United Nations obligations > and will be in accordance with the Labour Party’s long-stated policy for a nuclear weapons-free zone in the South Pacific,” Mr Prebble said.
