Three runners not available

Three Canterbury runners who performed well in the recent trials to select a team to compete in five road races in the United States were not included in the team because they were unavailable. Tony Good (Olympic), the former national marathon champion, finished third in the first trial from Teddington to Diamond Harbour but he will probably compete in the Nike City of Christchurch marathon at Queen’s Birthday week-end, where he hopes to better the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 2hrs 15min, though he has missed nomination.

Frank Brookes (Toe H), who was ninth in the first trial, will not go to the United States either. Instead, he will run in a marathon in Ireland.

Dennis Brown (University), a former Canterbury junior 800 metre champion, finished

sixth in the second 10km trial, at Kainga last Saturday, in a personal best time of 29min 525. Brown’s name was omitted from the list of results given to “The Press,” so his name did not appear in the results.

Brown was in Christchurch on holiday and returned to England this week where he has a teaching position. Brown will compete m track events in England, hoping to improve on his track times for middle distance events. He has a personal best 5000 metre time of 14min 14s.

Another leading Canterbury runner, Don Greig (New Brighton), did not compete in either trial because he is also unavailable for the United States tour. Greig, who has been nominated to represent New Zealand in the marathon at Brisbane, will compete in the City of London marathon on May 9.
