New-look Aust. netball team

NZPA Sydney Australia will bring a new look netball team for its tour of New Zealand in July. The goal-shoot, Anne Sargeant, a 24-year-old Sydney physical education teacher, is the only team member remaining from the Australian team which tied with New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago in the world tournament in 1979.

Four others represented Australia in the 1981 International Test series in Australia last year where New Zealand proved itself far superior to both the Australian and English teams. New Zealand and Australia are two of the top netball nations in the world and the Australians are looking forward to the forthcoming three-test series in July as a lead-up to the world tournament in Singapore next year.

“New Zealand has a brilliant team while ours is new to international competition so it has given the coach a tremendous job,” said the executive-director of the All

Australia Netball Association, Helen Edmunds, yesterday. The Australian coach is former New Zealand captain, Pam Barham, who now lectures at the University of Queensland.

The Australians are due to tour New Zealand from July 4 to July 18 and in that time will play three tests against New Zealand.

The president of A.A.N.A., Dierdre Hyland, whq will manage the Australian side, said from Brisbane yesterday there was no doubt at all about the tour’s taking place. The captain of the netball side will be Western Australia’s Jill Mclntosh, a centre court player who was a reserve in the 1981 Australian team.

Jan Croft, from Victoria, will be the Australian umpire for the series.

The team to tour New Zealand is: Jill Mclntosh (W.A.). captain. Anne Sargeant (N.S.W.), Karan Bulloch (N.S.W.), Diane Jackson (W.A.), Kay Partington (S.A.), Jenelle Gooen (Q), Jane Searle (V), Elizabeth White (Q), Marilyn Blyth (S.A.) and Sue Hawkins (V).
