Coach workshop to close
Twenty-six coachbuilders will lose their jobs when the coachbuilding works of Midland Coachlines, Ltd, closes at the end of June. The coachbuilding workshop in Montreal Street, is being closed because of a drop in demand for coaches. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Engineers’ Union, Mr R. J. Todd, said last evening he hoped that some of the men could find jobs with the new Mount Cook-Denning plant, at Sockburn. Some might also be absorbed by the Midland Coachlines panel-beating shop. Discussions on redundancy agreements for the coachbuilders and some clerical workers began last week.
