Free legal service opens
A new, free, legal service, called the Community Law Centre, was opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Hamish Hay, on Saturday afternoon. The centre will be open on week-day evenings, except Friday, and on Saturday mornings. It is situated in the Arts Centre, near the clock tower. A spokesman _ for . the centre, Miss C. Risk, said that the centre would be manned at all times by four
senior law students and a supervising qualified solicitor. A pool of 60 students was involved.’ * “Because we are students, we cannot go to court,” Miss Risk said. “We see ourselves as a third party, articulate and perhaps better informed, to deal with matters requiring negotiation.” ’ The centre aimed to help all sections of the community. “Serious” cases could be referred to qualified' solicitors.
