Hunter shot
PA Wellington A man who was shot in the face in a hunting accident in the foothills of the Tararua Range on Saturday afternoon was reported in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital last evening. The man, Alistair Wallace, a farm manager, of Maungatere Valley, west of Carterton, was shot from “reasonably” close range by a hunting companion, the police said. A Masterton helicopter pilot, Mr Jeffrey Sayer, flew
police and a doctor to the bush-covered hillside in the Maungatere Valley, after Mr Wallace’s companion raised the alarm. Mr Sayer said Mr Wallace had been lifted from the bush in a scoop net. After treatment in Masterton Hospital, Wellington’s rescue helicopter, which is equipped with ambulance gear, was called and Mr Wallace was flown to Wellington. Police were at the scene of the shooting yesterday reconstructing the incident.
