Nuclear weapons
Sir, — Six years ago. Graham Rhind wrote: “Russia
is preparing for an all-out military assault on the West." That was, and remains, one of his' fantasies. On April 16 he wrote: “Without massive imports of food and technology from the West. Soviet society would collapse." If that were even remotely true, we could save the whole ghastly cost of the arms race with a trade embargo, always provided we swallow the lie that Russia, with an economy half the size of America’s, leads the arms race. Three times this century, Russia has been invaded by a combination from "the West", suffering monumental human tragedy with the total loss of 42 million lives. Bordered by hostile China, plus over 200 American bases stretching from Alaska to Scandinavia (many located in police states such as Thailand. Pakistan and Turkey), is it any wonder, quoting Graham Rhmd again; that "Russia is heavily geared to armament production.” — Yours, etc.. M. T. MOORE. April 17. 1982.
