Church moves
Sir.-In the present climate of Anglican and Roman Catholic dialogue, it is sad to see R. J Burns (April 16) slipping so easily into a hardline, pre-Vatican II stance on that hoary old chestnut — the validity’ of Anglican Orders. Historically. non-Catholic sacraments were questioned because they were performed without the intention oi "doing what the Church does," the minister’s ordination being judged invalid because he was not ordained to offer the sacrifice of. the Mass. Here is the rub. The fact that theologians in both camps are reaching
“substantial agreement" on the Eucharist means that the original reason for the charge against Anglican Orders is losing its sting. Of course, the Pope's infallibility in making the original pronouncement remains a problem; yet with the current steady chipping away at the wall of division, and with the grace of God. even this seemingly intractable problem will be eventually overcome. — Yours, etc.. THE REV. MICHAEL HAWKINS, The Vicarage. Oxford. April 16, 1982.
