Money for the unemployed
Sir, — A disgusting array of today's youth is what I witnessed in Cathedral Square listening to a band today, the majority, in my opinion, being students and unemployed. Two people were circulating with money boxes asking: “Money for the unemployed.” "Noway." I said. I feel that we, the taxpayers, are paying quite enough to keep people like this and for them to have the audacity to beg for more is beyond me (and probably the law). People like these are quite happy to bludge; they get enough money now. Who wants to work wheri you can stand in the Square and listen to music? Get off your proverbiais and do
something constructive, is what I say. I am 22. and I think the average New Zealander is afraid of hard work, more so than people of many other nations. If not, they should prove me wrong and do something. The work is there if they want it. — Yours, etc.. (Miss) S. M. HENNESSY. April 16. 1982.
