Hospital delays

Sir.—Your article (April 15) “No solution seen to outpatient delays" reports that, where there were problems, they often related to the late arrival of senior, medical staff — in some cases this was “just routine lateness.” Is this meant to be a good excuse for the problem? If it is. could the N.C.H.B. please tell us about "routine lateness"? What does it mean, and what causes it? When we know that, perhaps some solution to the problem could be found. Few patients would complain if it was explained to them that senior staff had been held up by an emergency, but it is hardly surprising that 500 patients failed to turn up at St Andrew’s Outpatients if they were aware that there would be an interminable wait. Time •off work may cost money. The N.C.H.B. is not the only sufferer under the recession.— Yours, etc.,

HELEN CHAMBERS. April 15. 1982.
