Taxation
Sir,—While there is so much discussion now on tax reform, I decided to write, to your paper concerning some old people who receive National Superannuation. Many of us have to live in homes for the elderly, but in newspaper reports those mentioned seem to be people able to work, families, etc. I would state that National Superannuation does not pay for board and attention in these homes. About the cheapest would be paying $lOO a week; on top of that there are clothes to buy, paying for necessaries such as soap, medicines (in some cases), doctors, chiropodists, and small luxuries and taxis for those who. can walk a little. I have felt for some time that we are paying double tax. Tax is taken off before receipt. If we have a small personal income this is added to the gross National Superannuation. I have checked this and find that I pay double what I would pay if my personal income were taxed separately. Instead of $BOO I would pay s4oo.—Yours, etc.,
A. INNES. April 14, 1982.
