Mr D. M. Foster
Mr Douglas Maxwell Foster, a North Canterbury farmer who was well known for his community activities, has died at his Greendale home after a short illness. He was 63. Mr Foster was the Darfield delegate on the meat and wool section of 1 North Canterbury Federated Farmers for 16 years, and respresented North Canterbury in Wellington in the mid-1970s at meat and wool conferences. He was president of the Darfield branch of Federated Farmers for three years, and was on the North Canterbury provincial executive. He was born and brought up in Parnassus, where his family were farmers.
Mr Foster moved to Greendale after serving with the Air Force in World War 11. He trained in Canada, and saw aircrew service in Europe and the Pacific. Mr Foster held the rank of warrant officer at the end of the war. He was a past president of the Courtenay Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and of the Greendale Golf Club, where he was still a committee member at the time of his death. He was a past master of the Malvern Masonic Lodge, was vicepresident bf the Malvern Cricket sub-association, and had been president of the Greendale Cricket Club for 16 years. Mr Foster was chairman
of the Greendale School Committee for 10 years and a member of the Greendale Domain Board for 28 years. He was a founder member of the Malvern Lions Club and held several offices in that organisation. He was a pastpresident of the HororataMalvern Returned Services Association. Mr Foster also served on the vestry of St John’s Church, Hororata, for six years. He was also a member of the Christchurch Brevet Club, the Canterbury Club, the Canterbury Jockey Club, and the Hororata Trotting Club. Several hundred people attended his funeral service at St John’s Church, Hororata. Mr Foster is survived by his wife and four daughters.
