Schoolboy chess celebrity
NZPA London An English schoolboy, Nigel Short, was the toast of British .chess yesterday after forcing a draw with the world champion Anatoly Karpov, in the Phillips and Drew international tournament. Nigel, aged 16. played the Russian for a gruelling five hours and a half, making 55
moves in a lense battle of wits and nerves. He cornered the champion in perpetual check which led to stalemate. “1 am pretty pleased with mj’self because I was fighting for my life most of the time," said Nigel, who is studying “A" levels at Leigh College. Lancashire. During play, Karpov would stride away to observe other
players in the tournament while Nigel sipped orange juice and pondered his next move. But as. the duel progressed, Nigel gained greater, confidence, and he would go for short walks round the floor while Karpov, bent over' the board, and /plotted. Karpov, aged 3Q. refused to • speak about the game afterwards. .
