Mururoa incident upsets N.C.C.

The National Council of Churches and the Catholic Commission for Evangelisation, Justice and Development, both based in Christchurch, have condemned the French military forces at Mururoa for their harassment of the yacht Pacific Peacemaker earlier this month.

The Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, The Most Rev. B. P. Ashby, and the secretary of the N.C.C.. the Rev. Angus MacLeod, have sent a letter of protest to the French Ambassador asking that the French Government pay for the damage to the yacht. A French naval vessel,'the A 779, bore down on the Peacemaker and swung out a crane which struck and broke the mizzen stays, causing the mizzen mast to come off..

The protest has been supported by churches in Australia and the Pacific area. The Pacific Conference of Churches has called for an independent survey of Murouoa Atoll to determine the extent of radiation leakage into the ocean.
