Govt to help children
PA Wellington Inner-city Auckland, Otara. and the Hastings suburb of Flaxmore will be part of an experiment by the Education Department in helping "at risk" children. A pilot programme in each area under the Community Education Initiatives Scheme would cost $450,000 in the coming year, said the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) yesterday. The scheme was a result of the report of the Parliamentary - Select Committee on Gangs. Mr Wellington said.
Each scheme would "cater for the needs of underachieving pupils and young people with constructive leisure time,” said Mr Wellington.
A local committee would be formed in each of the three areas and a co-ordina-tor employed to allow the programme d start, he said.
