Princess Dan unbeaten in series

By

J. J. BOYLE

The Feilding-owned and trained Princess Dan has came out of the Lowlands/ Wrightson Series for three-year-old fillies with a 100 per cent record. Her two wins, the first of them in the Inglewood Stakes at Rangiora, the other in yesterday’s Waretep Stakes at Riccarton, did not give her the title. But the ease with which she won at each appearance allowed for fresh stocktaking as to the standard of the South Island fillies.

Mr and Mrs Bill Fugle’s home-bred filly won the Warstep Stakes with almost as much authority if not with the ease that distinguished her win at Rangiora. Ray Hewinson allowed her to track the pacemaking Sea Princess to the straight. He found nothing to con-

Princess Dan responded generously for the final pinch and won going away by a length and a half. But in saving second without being challenged Sea Princess made her position as series winner safe. She was three lengths better than Riplia. The big disappointment of the race was The Wink. She was second favourite, but showed nothing from the home turn, and faded to last. A veterinary surgeon examined The Wink after the race, but could find nothing wrong with her. Her rider, Ali Robinson, could find no excuse for the gfilly and could only surmise that she had “gone over the top.” j
