Debating to Dunedin
A Dunedin team won the South Island Debating Tournament and the Bank of New Zealand Challenge Cup in Dunedin. With 20 minutes preparation on the topic "That bludgers have made New Zealand great,” the team (Rob Hendry, Russell Childes, Lyn Hill) narrowly beat the Canterbury Speaking Union team to" win the title. The University of Canterbury (Mary McCallum, Paul Brown, Steven Zindel) beat Timaru in the impromptu
final after five minutes preparation to affirm "that there should be a law against it.” Eight teams competed for $275 in. prizes at the tournament. • The South Island team was announced after the competitions. The team is: John Milligan (Canterbury), Michael Laws (North Otago), David Round (Canterbury); reserve, Mary McCallum (University of Canterbury). David Round was judged best speaker of the tournament. ■
