Bastion Point

Sir—l have stood on Bastion Point. It has a power and beauty which cries out to be recognised as a symbol of Maori pride and dignity. I have spoken with the protesters, seen the State houses they live in on land already taken from them, and heard their stories of the years of broken promises and the greedy tricks of speculators. I have seen the unfinished road which runs straight through the present housing development and stops at the reservation fence like a dagger pointed at the heart of the Ngati Whatua people. I have heard how the Government negotiated its terms with a trust board of its own choosing. headed by a man who lives in Palmerston North. I cannot understand how any Government can so blatantly trample the spirit of a people for the sake of a few quick dollars — Yours, etc., ALAN WILKINSON, Leader, N.Z. Values Party.
