Russian ballet
Sir,—So the Russian Ballet tour of New Zealand will begin on April 2. No doubt all those who talked about social conscience and demonstrated so vociferously against the presence of the Springboks will be out on the streets again on behalf of all the oppressed. After all the Russian ballet is not a cultural event but an insidious attempt by the Kremlin to placate those who are concerned about recent events in Poland and Afghanistan. If the anti-Russian demonstrations are not of similar magnitude to those of last winter, then I will be forced to conclude, since anti-Springbok demonstrators are such virtuous and consistent people, that there is no injustice in Russia today, and that most Poles and Afghans welcome the Russian presence in their respective countries.—Yours, etc., J. B. CALLAN. March 27, 1982.
