Exercise in last phase
The last phase of the fivenation defence exercise, Southern Safari 82, began last evening with the friendly forces digging into defensive positions in the high country between Lake Pukaki and Tekapo. The 2nd/lst Battalion. Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, secured the area in a battalion attack at dawn yesterday.,. The attack was helped by an air strike by Royal New
Zealand Air Force Strikemasters of No. 14 Squadron based at Wigram for the exercise. A soldier from the Malaysian contingent to the exercise was taken to Timaru Hospital yesterday suffering from abdominal pains. He underwent surgery soon after for the removal of his appendix. His condition last evening was reported to be "as well as can be expected."
