Trawler stuck
PA Westport A third attempt was scheduled for midnight last night to refloat a Nelson trawler stranded on Westport’s North Beach. The Mako ran aground near the Westport harbourmouth while leaving port at low tide on Saturday morn-' ing. Attempts to pull her clear on Saturday had almost succeeded when a tow rope snapped.
The trawler has since been swept about half a kilometre east and is now stuck fast on the beach, her bow facing the shore. On Saturday the Mako offloaded several tonnes of ice into tuna bins suspended from a helicopter. The fisheries research vessel, the W. J. Scott, tried to pull her clear at high tide on Saturday night and again yesterday, but the rope snapped both times.
