At least eight people were killed and more than 5000 families left homeless when typhoon Nelson swept through the Philippines central and southern provinces at the week-end, said the country’s official ' news agency. Crop and property loss was estimated at $240,000 in central Bohol Province, while most of the productive coconut trees were destroyed in the southern town of Loreto.
