Bolivian ’quake
NZPA-Reuter La Paz At least 25 people, nearly all of the inhabitants of a remote village in southern Bolivia, have died buried under tonnes of mud after an earthquake. National newspapers said that the quake on Thursday caused a huge landslide in the village of San Josecito. near the Bolivian-Argentine frontier.
The total population of San Josecito before the landslide was thought to be 30, the reports said. The military' commander of nearby Tarija had sent helicopters to verify local reports of the tragedy, they said, but because of’heavy rain which has caused Bolivia’s military Government to declare a state of national emergency, the aircraft could not get near the area.
