Railways land for sheltered workshop
The Canterbury Sheltered Workshops Association will buy a 0.25 ha plot of New Zealand Railways land fronting Riccarton Road. The association wants to use the land, which is next to its existing -property on Riccarton Road, to extend its workshop and Individual Living Programme. The director of the assoiation, Mrs Rosemary Carr, said yesterday that the extensions were “well overdue.” The Individual Living Programme was designed to train young people at the workshop to live independently of institutions.
Mrs Carr was not able to disclose the amount to be paid for the land but said that the association already had the money. The land is zoned residential. Town planning approving will have to be obtained before building can begin. An appeal to raise money for the buildings may be launched by the association. Mrs Carr was hopeful that building could then begin “almost immediately.” In a few weeks the organisation will celebrate 25 years of service. This would be an ideal time to launch a fund-raising appeal, Mrs Carr said.
