Top northern riders at Nelson today

From

J. J. BOYLE

Nelson Leading North Island jockeys will move into Nelson for the second day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s threeday meeting, today. The newcomers, Bruce Compton, Jim Cassidy, David Walsh and Jim Walker all have mounts in the Caltex Gold Cup, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double. But it is

doubtful if any one of them will be on the favourite if Glenmana runs. Glenmana, Brian Hibberd’s mount, was a good second to Claremont Wonder in the Nelson Cup on Saturday. Compton has been engaged for Leggy Lee, Cassidy for Quay Princess, Walsh for Bold Monarch, and Walker for Nelson’s Command. Of that lot, Bold Monarch

brings strongest form from the Nelson Cup. He was fourth in Saturday’s feature race. ■ Claremont Wonder, the Nelson Cup winner, might be kept for the final day of the meeting, according to his trainer, Graeme Rogerson. But Rogerson might have two hopefuls in Ruvain and Travolta for the Dominion Breweries Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Ruvain is a newcomer at the meeting but his latest start at the same distance (1400 m produced a second at Ellerslie. The stable horseman, Peter Tims, who won on Travolta on Saturday, will be on Ruvain today. Nelson’s spell of sunny weather continued yesterday and the track will be firm and fast.
