Mixed fortunes for visitor at judo
Jonathan Mitchell (England) had mixed fortunes when he had his first taste of competition in New Zealand' at the Canterbury closed judo championships at St Thomas’s College at the weekend. Mitchell, aged 26, a second dan black belt who competed by invitation, lost only one fight, but that was sufficient to put him out of the senior men’s open grade. . Mitchell, who is on a working holiday, went unbeaten through his weight division (under 95kg), although he beat the brown belt, Phillip McSweeney, only on a decision. Mitchell was not eligible for the title but received a visitors’ gold medal. Later, the fast-improving McSweeney reversed that result in the senior men’s open when, early in the contest, he pinned the bearded Mitchell on the ground for some time and forced him to submit. The senior men's open attracted 19 entries, 11 of them from black belts. Graeme Spinks (CantAmJu), the title-holder, had to be content with a bronze medal after having lost to the rather heavier Michael Smith (Y.M.C.A.), who went on to shade his club-mate, McSweeney, in a slow-moving final that seemed to indicate the weariness of the protagonists. Leith Davidson (Y.M.C.A.), a brown belt, beat a black belt on the way to winning the under65kg class. The women's open title went, for the eleventh time, to the policewoman, Sandra Manderson (CanAmJu).
